UB 40 started in Birmingham, one of England's most diverse cities, in the summer
of 1978. The group took their name from a British unemployment form. With worldwide
sales grossing 30 million albums, UB40 confirms how far a group can go by staying
true to their roots. By 1979 they had played their first local concert. British
radio personality, John Peel was so captivated by the group, he invited them to
perform on his national broadcast show in January 1980. Their single "King"
became a top five hit in England in February 1980, thus launching their career.
UB 40's fame crossed over to America due to the 1983 album, Labour Of Love, with
its single, "Red, Red Wine." The song landed the band their first number
one hit in the U.S. and then another hit single in July 1985 with “I Got
You Babe.” Labour Of Love II was released in November of 1989 and scored
a platinum-plus hit.
